I’m an award-winning foreign correspondent, writer, and audiophile at NPR.

You can listen or read to my work at NPR here.

I am currently based in Taipei, Taiwan, after nearly seven years reporting from Beijing and mainland China.

I am also writing a book drawing on my years of reporting in China about Chinese identity for Crown Publishing.

Titled LET ONLY RED FLOWERS BLOOM, the book is an exploration of what it means to be Chinese today in Xi Jinping’s China from the perspective of those he and the government are desperate to subjugate, spotlighting dissidents, activists, and those caught in the political fray due to their religion, capturing a wide and complex picture of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan beyond the boundaries of the state’s strict definition of “Chinese” identity.

I’m attracted to how identity shapes our view of the world and the backstories behind the headlines.

I love stories that explore the overlooked, quirky, and personality-driven side of news.

My reporting has let me nerd out over semiconductors and drones, travel to environmental wastelands and write about girl bands and art. I’ve filed stories from the bottom of a coal mine, the top of a mosque in Qinghai and inside a cave Chairman Mao once lived in.
